There is No "Magic Potion" When It Comes to Health and Longevity

By Jamie G. Phillips, DC

I have noticed recently that the media has bombarded us with innumerable featured articles praising research on the heart benefits of red wine (resveratrol), the memory loss benefits of coffee (caffeine), and the amazing benefits of a monumental number of natural supplements that singularly "guarantee" to reduce or prevent every known cause of mortality. In fact, if the studies and advertisements are a meter of human interests, our quest for longevity has taken a back seat to a desire for immortality.

Let me clarify, first of all, that I am a believer in taking supplements and take them, myself. Secondly, I should be candid by saying that I am one who appreciates a glass of red wine. So, the suggestion that it might truly be beneficial to my health, especially my heart, merely adds to my enjoyment. And, if something as simple as drinking coffee could demonstrably prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, then I'd be tempted to give up my practice and open a Starbucks.

But, let's stop and ponder the wisdom of randomly adding an extra cuppa to your breakfast routine, drinking another glass of red wine with dinner, or plunking down a pile of cash on high-priced minerals and herbs that guarantee near-immortality.

For instance, let us consider the human condition. We are dynamic, biological beings, free to vigorously participate in life. We have not been restricted to a cage all our life, and we have not been bred to "unnaturally" incur the age-related afflictions that lab animals do, disease and debilitation that is then "eliminated" by resveratrol, caffeine, or some "amazing" supplement.

Basically, our being dynamic and biological is another way of saying that we, humans, are not " mechanistic automatons." In other words, we aren't all precisely alike. Because our central integrative states are not exactly the same, internal provocation factors and external irritation influences affect us in different ways. For example, though smoking cigarettes is commonly harmful to most people, there are a few individuals who can smoke cigarettes and still achieve longevity without any related ill effects.

Scientific studies isolate certain variables in order to achieve particular outcomes. That's scientific inquiry! But, because the results occur through such isolation, and due to the fact that they are generally done on animals, when it comes to translating such results to humans, it can be said that what may work for some of the people all of the time, won't work for all of the people all of the time, and sometimes won't work at all (to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln!).

Everyday you make considerable choices that affect both your health and longevity. Decisions such as what you'll eat and how much exercise and rest you'll get will either be good for you, or not so good. Obviously, your unhealthy choices are not beneficial for your long-term health. And, even though you know, by the way your individual body responds to certain things, you may often ignore these important health messages.

Then you, like many others, may enthusiastically jump on the bandwagon of the latest report that announces that researchers have uncovered THE VERY THING that has the potency to reverse all of the excessive and unhealthy things you have been doing to your body on a routine basis! Talk about wishful thinking!

The elegantly balanced system of your body (homeostasis) is highly responsive and intricate. This delicate system becomes "off balance" when you live an unhealthy lifestyle. Eventually, the imbalances nurtured through poor health choices, result in diseases.

If supplements help you to feel more energetic and healthy, then as a chiropractor who takes them as well, I say great, take them! If it feels like the thing to do, drink that additional cup of coffee as well. And, have a little more red wine if it honestly feels beneficial. But, keep in mind that the only legitimate way for anyone to avert or reverse age-related health problems is by choosing a consistently healthy lifestyle. You won't get healthier by chance. There is no "lucky charm" when it comes to health and longevity. - 27105

How To Use Dairy Produce: Part 2 - Cheese

By Owen Jones

Basic Preparation Of Foods: Dairy Produce.

HARD AND SOFT CHEESES

Cheeses are made from milk which has been naturally or artificially turned sour. The former method is achieved by standing the milk in a warm place and allowing natural, beneficial bacteria to convert the milk's natural sugars into lactic acid. The latter method is effected by adding an enzyme, usually in to form of rennet.

Salt and colouring and frequently put in too. The whey is then allowed to drain away and the curds are pressed into moulds where they are kept until ripened or cured. Some cheeses, usually hard ones, are subjected to pressure; soft cheeses are not. Curds are ripened or cured by various means. The way it's done, the quality of the milk, the breed of cow, sheep or other animal and its pasture, and the type of bacteria all govern the end result.

Some local conditions are unique and those areas produce cheeses that are not successfully reproduced elsewhere: for example Gruyere and Camembert, although factories do try. They even have some success, as most of the world's Cheddar cheese now comes from the USA and Canada.

The constituents of cheese are roughly|typically|: 33% fat, 33% protein and 33% water with salt, colouring, sugar etc making up the other 1%. These proportions do vary from region to region as some producers use full-cream milk, others skimmed-milk and yet others add extra cream. Some add some extra sugar, although most do not. All cheeses have a high calcium content and may be considered as 'concentrated milk' and stored as such.

Many people say that cheese should not be kept in a fridge and while storing in water, as for milk, is not an option, a cool larder is ideal. Try the traditional method of hanging it up in cheesecloth in a cool, airy place. If the weather is hot, dampen the cloth with water to which a little vinegar has been added.

in Europe, cheese is frequently served with a salad or/and bread and is often presented after or instead of the dessert course. Hard cheese can be nigh-on impossible for children to digest and grating it first will make it more edible for them. After being grated the cheese can be scattered on vegetables or fish soups or sauces; combined with egg, pasta, rice and oatmeal dishes; put on baked potatoes or pastry; toasted on bread or put in sandwiches or salads.

How To Cook Cheese: A little known fact is that many people find cooked cheese indigestible and the reason lies in its structure. Here is why: cooked starch can be digested by the saliva in the mouth but other foods must pass to the stomach or intestines for this process. They are, however, broken up in the mouth. Digestion of protein begins in the stomach and is completed in the small intestine, while fat is not rendered soluble until it reaches the small intestine.

Cheese possesses a high fat and protein mixture, but in melting, the fat often covers the protein and prevents the digestive juices reaching it in the stomach. Therefore, its digestion is delayed until the fat has been absorbed in the intestines. Cheese can be rendered more digestible by:

1] Combining it with some starchy food, because the starch will absorb the fat, not allowing it to cover the protein.

2] Adding seasoning. Cayenne Pepper or mustard will irritate the intestinal lining, causing extra digestive juices to be released.

3] Cooking quickly at high temperature. This prevents the protein from becoming tough and stringy and therefore, harder to digest. Add cheese late to sauces.

4] Adding alkali: so, large pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda per 75g (3 ozs) will help neutralize the fatty acids and make the proteins more easily digestible. - 27105

Discount Restaurant Furniture Is Available All Year Long

By Sam Bousack

Owning a business of your own is hard work and you may not always have the best deals when you need them. With a business like a restaurant you will have to find the best deals on your furniture if you hope to keep your expenses down. Finding discount restaurant furniture is pretty easy nowadays with the internet here to help.

We all want to buy things at discount price and, most of the time; you will find that you will get a discount if your purchase is at a good price when you get to the checkout. You will of course, have to speak to the store manager or the owner of the store you are buying your furniture. One of the first places you will look for discount restaurant furniture will be a factory shop.

Discount Restaurant Furniture At Wholesale Prices

Another idea for finding cheap furniture is to check out a few classified websites. Here you could come across a private seller of handmade furniture, or perhaps an old restaurant that wants to get rid of its stock. While these could be second hand, it will help you if you are really strapped for cash. Private sellers are also always willing to bargain if you purchase a lot of items from them.

Home decor stores are normally quite pricey for a restaurant and you will have to get so many items that it will not be worth it. That is unless you can find a store that has a special policy for businesses. There are some places that offer discounts for restaurants, hotels and guest houses and other businesses. The great thing about this is that you can get some really nice furniture for cheaper than at other places.

You do get other places where you can buy you discount restaurant furniture. These are not factory stores and they are not home deco stores, but they are stores that sell almost everything and anything, and the best parts if that you can buy in bulk here.

With getting great looking furniture for your restaurant you might also want to get furniture made. This can be specifically for the theme you have going or the overall atmosphere you want to create. Many places that make furniture charge a lot, but you should research companies online and in your local paper and compare prices.

You will also be able to get nice furniture if you get it custom made for you. This is what many restaurant owners are doing these days, the only problem with this is that it is not as cheap as the furniture that is made in bulk, though it will be a bit more sturdy. The other problem is that it could take a while to get replacement tables and chairs if one of the ones you have was to break. - 27105

The Most Delicious Lemon Bars

By Mike Sasaki

Some like their desserts with chocolate and others prefer vanilla...and some like both. I fall into the last category, I like both. Although, I like lemon bars the best. Chocolate and vanilla are fine, but lemon bars offer something different. Fruity desserts are the best and a hint of butter is a delicious addition. I could easily finish 5-10 lemon bars in one sitting.

Although, I enjoy store bought lemon bars and the lemon bars you can find in a coffee house, I'd rather make them myself. They are simple to make and delicious. Just follow these easy steps and you'll be enjoying lemon bars in no time.

Step 1 - Get all of the ingredients necessary. You will find that you already have most of the ingredients already, but if not, it's a 10 minute trip to the grocery store.

Step 2 - Follow these instructions for delicious http://www.recipematcher.com/index.php/recipe/show/Best-Lemon-Bars/.

You don't have a lot of time to spend making lemon bars? No problem. Just follow the recipe and you'll find that these quick and easy lemon bars take less time than you think. Be sure to share your homemade lemon bars with those you want to thank for doing something or for those that you want to impress. There is nothing better than to give a girl that you're interested in, dessert. And lemon bars are the perfect dessert to get attention from the opposite sex.

There are a lot of positives with lemon bars, but there is a huge downside if you eat too many lemon bars. Even though this involves a fruit, lemons, their are a lot of calories in lemon bars. I cut back on the amount of butter I use because most lemon bar recipes use an entire stick of butter, which is definitely not healthy and actually makes the lemon bar taste more like butter than lemons. If you reduce the amount of butter and sugar, it'll make these lemon bars a little healthier and still delicious.

Best of luck baking these lemon bars. If done correctly, you'll really enjoy eating them. Also, be sure to try out other lemon bar recipes. - 27105

Slow Cooking Crock Pots Save Time in the Kitchen

By Mike Sasaki

What if I told you I could teach you how to save hundreds of dollars a month with your food budget? What if I told you that in addition to this I could save you hours in the kitchen?

Cooking slower can actually help you go faster and spend less time in the kitchen in the long run. Make sense? When you prepare a crock pot meal in the morning (or the night before while you watch tv), the food will be ready when you get home.

Top reasons to dust of the crock pot and start slow cooking again.

1. Save money. Starting a meal in the crock pot in the morning can save you from the temptation of grabbing fast food during the evening family rush hour. Save those fast food bucks for a meal out at a nice restaurant on the weekend when you have time to sit and enjoy it.

2. Save money. This reason's so nice we said it twice. Crockery cooking can make less-expensive cuts of meat tender and delicious.

3. Save time. Cook when you have more energy and less stress. Have your food ready and waiting for you rather than the other way around. Youll also save time on clean up. After the meal, you'll have just one pot to wash. If you have a crock pot with the removable crockery liner (and you really should), clean up is extra easy.

4. Eat healthy. It doesnt take a nutritionist to know that a meal of meat and veggies with a green salad on the side is going to be better for your body than another frozen pizza.

5. Keep your kitchen cool and your food hot. You won't have to heat up the whole house just to roast a chicken or cook a pot of stew. The crock pot also frees the oven and stove for other foods when you're cooking a big meal. Whatever you do, don't peak inside your crock pot by opening up the lid. That'll ruin your meal! - 27105

Organic Green Coffee Beans

By Paul J Easton

Organic green coffee beans are beans which have been grown naturally. No chemicals, no harmful pesticides, and no unnatural fertilizers have been used. This is not only beneficial to the environment, which does indeed get help by recycling, composting, and enriching the soil. It is also better for you, each time you sit back to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

The beans are not called "green" because of these environmental benefits, nor are they green because they are not ripe. A green coffee bean is one which has not yet been roasted, a necessary process that must be followed, either by the distributor or the consumer, before the beans can be ground and brewed.

While most coffee drinkers find it far more convenient to buy their coffee already roasted, ground, and sealed in a can, more and more people are grinding their own beans, feeling that both the aroma and the taste of the brewed java is fresher. And now there are those who buy their coffee green, believing that tit lasts longer and stays fresher if it is roasted and ground just before brewing.

Because over ten billion pounds of coffee is consumed yearly, exceeded only by the use of petroleum on the world market, it really is wise to consider using only organically grown coffee. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, because of the extra man power used, and the speed with which it must be processed. You will pay less for green beans than those which are roasted before sold, but then you will have the responsibility of roasting them and grinding them yourself.

Organic green coffee beans come in almost as many varieties as the pre-roasted beans. You will not have difficulty finding decaffeinated, Hawaiian, Jamaican Blue Mountain, African, or the South American coffees.

Almost all coffee drinkers (and let's face it, almost everyone drinks coffee) drink a minimum of one cup a day. By drinking organic coffee, you are lessening the amount of artificial and harmful chemicals that you are ingesting, and you are also helping the environment.

Some say that organic coffee tastes softer and more fruity. Others say it tastes the same, but is fresher, and environmentally safe. The general consensus among organic green coffee buyers is that these beans stay fresh the longest of all beans. It is their practice to roast them in small batches, and then grind them as used. - 27105

Organic Coffee Pods

By Paul J Easton

Organic coffee pods are individual portions of coffee grounds, which are pre-sealed in a coffee filter paper. They are similar to tea bags, which can be dipped into hot water to brew a cup of tea. But coffee pods need to be dropped into a special coffee pot that drips very hot water on the pod, providing you with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in about thirty seconds. It is a quick, neat, and easy way to get a fresh brewed cup of coffee with every cup you drink.

There is a huge variety of flavors available to the coffee connoisseur. The ten most popular flavors are almond, cinnamon, caramel, chocolate, French vanilla, hazelnut, Irish cream, peppermint, espresso, and cappuccino.

But there are many, many more, and new combinations pop up all the time.

If you check online under organic coffee pods, you will discover hundreds of distributors, each with their own lines of coffee and choices of flavors. You will be able to find both organic and traditional, the various roast choices and any number of flavors to pick from.

Many people, once they have tried organic coffee pods, feel that making coffee by the potfull gives you a lackluster, stale cup of java. They also love the convenience of not having to deal with loose coffee messes. These pods are packaged in packages of six, sixteen, or twenty-five single pods, depending on what brand you buy, and can be purchased in one flavor or style or in a mixed variety. The pods are sixty-two mm wide and weigh seven grams each. They brew one cup of coffee per pod.

So what are the real advantages of organic coffee pods as compared to buying it loose and by the pound? The types of roast available are light, medium, dark, flavored, and decaffeinated. This is true of both kinds of packaging. For one thing, you won't need a coffee grinder to get a fresh brewed cup of coffee. It is as easy to use as a tea bag, and gives you the taste of fresh home brewed coffee. And it is so much less messy than loose grounds are. The coffeemaker is also simple and easy to use.

Let's face it. If you want a consistent, perfect cup of coffee every time, using organic coffee pods is the way to do it. There will be no mess, no waste, and the perfect taste every time you pour a cup of java! - 27105

Natural Sweetener Should be Your Only Sweetener

By Jamis Hartley

Hundreds of people are seeking out healthy alternatives to sugar. Some are looking to lose weight or just trying to keep their bodies running smooth. Others, unfortunately, are suffering from health conditions like diabetes and must find a different way to manage their diet. The good news is it can be done. The bad news is there are a lot of tricky products out there to watch out for.

It is important to understand that there are some sweeteners out there that are less healthy than others. In particular saccharin and aspartame are a couple very popular ones that just aren't a good healthy choice. Whereas all natural sweeteners made from fruits and plants can fill the same purpose but be so much better for our precious bodies. I prefer to choose the all natural option.

Some of the promising natural sweeteners hitting the market are Mannitol, Sorbitol, Stevia, Xylitol and, my favorite, Erythritol. These sweeteners are a good healthy alternative to sugar but even among these healthier choices there are things to consider. Erythritol is the natural sweetness in many fruits and vegetables. It is all natural and is easily digested making it a safe choice.

Erythritol is a calorie free natural sweetener made from fruits (as previously mentioned). It occurs naturally in melons, pears, grapes, mushrooms and a few other kinds of foods and drinks. This is one of the only natural sweeteners that will not cause tooth decay and is commercially produced and added to various foods and drinks to provide sweet flavor. It is also better for those with digestive system problems as it is more easily digested. If you decide to use natural sweeteners, Erythitrol is the best for you all the way around.

Erythritol is also a great natural sweetener for people with diabetes or other medical conditions where sugar is the enemy. If you are using a low carbohydrate diet plan or low glycemic index plan, this is the perfect solution as its number on the glycemic index is zero, contains no carbohydrates and has only .2 calories per gram. Of all the natural sweeteners you can use today, Erythritol does not promote tooth decay, is better for digestion and is perfect for any diet plan. You can use Erythritol in recipes, on cereal or anything you choose to sweeten. More and more people are jumping on the bandwagon and using natural sweeteners for their foods and drinks these days. Before you use any kind of sweetener, make sure your doctor approves and that you have no allergies to certain fruits or plants. - 27105

Plan Your Camping Trip

By Hasse Larsen

If you are considering going on a camping trip, there are a lot of things you should make sure that you have sorted out before going. Some people consider the planning process half the trip because it is so important.

There are a few things that you cannot be without on your trip. In this article I will tell you just what those things are. You can forget a lot, but if forget these things your trip will be hard to finish.

The first thing you need to pack is your cooking equipment. In every successful camping trip, there is a tale of some meal that was excellent. If you can make your meals worth remembering, you will definitely go on more trips.

A camping tent is also an essential part of just about every trip. You can of course sleep under the sky in some cases, but in most situations a tent is required. If you are buying a new tent, you should make sure that you get one that you have enough space to feel comfortable in.

A sleeping bag should be a part of your basic camping equipment. Some people claim that they can easily sleep outside without a sleeping bag, but for me it is essential. It is the feeling of having something wrapped around my body when I sleep that makes it so important. You should also consider an inflatable mattress.

A map of the region that you are camping is very handy to have. A GPS device will also do just perfect.

All the things we have covered here are very important. There is still one thing that is probably more important than all of them. That thing is food. For most people, bringing food when camping is very important, as they are not able to catch any food them selves. Bring food, a camping chair and a camping table and you can enjoy your meals like you do at home. - 27105

Cheesecake And Its History

By Daniel Ruso

This article is about: cheese cake recipes

Who doesn't love Cheesecake? It is a great choice of dessert for many occasions.

We are blessed to have the variety of cheesecakes that we have today. We can chose anything from new york cheesecake, to a chocolate cheesecake, to many different types of fruit cheesecake.

The more complex cheesecakes include German chocolate, cinnamon swirl, and berry wild cheesecake. But there are many more.

What many people don't know is that this dessert was just as popular at the time it was originally created, even been offered to appease the gods.

With the knowledge and discoveries we've made today, the history of the cheesecake can be traced back 2000 years.

We do not know what these cheesecakes had been called at that time, but we do know they were served to Olympians in the original Olympic games held in 776 BC on the Isle of Delos.

Often served in smaller sizes than today's, the Greeks viewed this dessert as a good source of energy for the athletes.

The Romans eventually did conquer the Greeks, and with the conquest, they adopted much of their culture. They began to implement this dessert in their own diet, calling it placenta (also called Libum).

The earliest manuscript we have for the Roman placenta was written in the first century B.C. by the Roman politician Marcus Porcius Cato.

The simple recipe was:

Libum to be made as follows: 2 pounds cheese well crushed in a mortar; when it is well crushed, add in 1 pound bread-wheat flour or, if you want it to be lighter, just 1/2 a pound, to be mixed with the cheese.

Add one egg and mix all together well. Make a loaf of this, with the leaves under it, and cook slowly in a hot fire under a brick.

Romans often offered food to household and temple gods.

There were thousands of gods. Some of the bigger ones were Jupiter, Janus, Pomona, Consus, Ops, and Saturn. Each god had their individual roles.

The Roman believed their success in life relied upon these gods. This led them to lay down many sacrifices.

Although we love our cheesecakes today, we cannot compare with the Romans who used this dessert to appease the gods and bring favor upon themselves. - 27105

Retooling The Pantry: Six Kitchen Staples With Surprising Uses

By Matthew Kaplan

Every pantry is stocked full of non-perishable staple items that do not go bad that we buy for those rare occasions when we need them in a recipe. For most people, the pantry is full of non-perishable items, canned goods and other food stuffs, and those food stuffs go mostly unused and dormant. Don't let your pantry food staples go to waste. Cupboard kitchen staples are inexpensive and delicious and don't deserve to stand idle in culinary purgatory. Kitchen staples can have some unique culinary applications. Follow these tips to learn how to add new and interesting touches to your meals with everyday kitchen staples.

Peanut Butter: In almost every cupboard sits a half-eaten jar of peanut butter. The pantry staple is rich, creamy and tasty, but most people only use peanut butter for sandwiches and occasionally dessert. The creamy richness of peanut butter is great in savory applications too. Add peanut butter to your next stir fry to give it a Thai-inspired flavor. Use peanut butter as the base to a peanut sauce, which goes perfectly with pasta and vegetables.

Soy Sauce: Almost every East Asian dish calls for soy sauce. Soy sauce adds a slight nutty, salty taste to any dish, but most people only use soy sauce when cooking an Asian-style recipe. Soy sauce is a versatile ingredient that can work well in many recipes. Experiment with soy sauce and use it instead of salt in your favorite recipes to add some depth to the recipe. In particular, soy sauce tastes fantastic in barbecue sauces.

Almonds: Like with most nuts, many people only buy almonds to snack on or for the occasional dessert. Almonds can be ground up into a fine powder to create almond flour, a delicious, protein-rich and gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. You can also blend almonds with water to create almond milk, a creamy and delicious beverage that is a great alternative to milk.

Bisquick: Originally intended for biscuits, many people now use Bisquick as the base to make pancakes at home. Bisquick has a wide variety of uses outside of just pancakes and biscuits. Use Bisquick as part of the dry base ingredients for a host of desserts, from cakes and pies to muffins and tarts. It also works great in casseroles too.

Cashews: As is the case with almonds and other nuts, cashews have a wide array of uses, but most only use them in the occasional dessert. Besides being a delicious out-of-hand snack, cashews add a nice crunchiness to vegetable dishes like a stir fry, a pasta dish or a casserole. Additionally, you can blend cashews in a food processor to create cashew butter, a spread similar to peanut butter.

Cocoa Powder: This rich chocolate powder only gets used in most kitchens to add a bit of flavor to the occasional dessert. Do not let the powerful chocolate flavor cocoa powder provides to go to waste. Use cocoa powder as part of a homemade hot chocolate mix. It also works particularly well in spicy applications, lending a bittersweet note to spicy recipes. Use cocoa powder to make an authentic mole sauce. Add cocoa powder to your favorite chili recipe. - 27105

Eating healthy doesn't have to be difficult nor complicated. After you start making healthy choices, and make it a daily habit, you won't have to think about it much again. All you need to do is have healthy food choices available and the rest is easy.

When considering a meal or a snack, always strive for a proper balance between a protein, carbohydrate and fat.

Have you established for yourself your caloric consumption needs? I know for myself, if I want to maintain my weight, I should not eat any more than 1500 calories per day. If I want to lose, my daily calorie intake is no more than 1200 calories per day.

Once you find out how many calories you should be eating, you then need to space them over 5-6 small daily meals/snacks through the day. The meals and or snacks should compliment each other with the proper balance of carbohydrates, fats and protein. I will give you an example of these choices to make during the day.

I like to take a minute and quickly mention something about portion sizes. Do you know what a serving of meat looks like? No, it's not the 12 ounce Ribeye at your local steak house. A protein of meat is 3 ounces, the size of a woman's palm.

SEVERAL VISUAL EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT FOOD PORTIONS:

* 1 medium fruit -- tight fist or tennis ball

* 1/2 cup of rice, pasta, cooked cereal, fruit, or veggie -- cupcake size or tight fist

* 1 cup of raw salad -- the amount you can hold in two hands cupped together.

* 1 medium baked potato -- computer mouse

* 1 cup of cold cereal -- large handful or tight fist

* 3 ounces of meat, poultry or fish -- palm of a woman's hand or deck of cards

* 1 ounce of cheese -- 4 dice or the top half of your thumb

* 1 ounce of poultry, fish, chicken or meat -- 1 egg

* 1 tsp -- the tip of a medium-framed woman's thumb. 1 tbsp is equal to 3 tsp.

BREAKFAST:

It is important to start the day with a good breakfast. A good breakfast is needed to maintain level blood sugars throughout the morning. Try to keep breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same calorie count and then add two to three snacks between meals to make up the 5-6 recommended meals.

Choose an item from each of the food groups for a healthy balanced breakfast.

Protein: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 cup nonfat milk, 1 cup low fat yogurt, 1 oz of low fat cheese

Carbohydrate: 1/2 cup of whole grain cereal or oatmeal, granola bar, 1 slice of whole grain toast, bagel or muffin.

Fruit: 3/4 cup of raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, 1/2 banana, small apple, orange, grapefruit,

LUNCH AND DINNER:

Preparing lunch and dinner is very simple. Pick a lean protein, add some vegetables and top it off with some fruit for dessert.

Choose an item from each of the food groups for a healthy balanced lunch or dinner.

Protein: Turkey, lean beef, pork, chicken, fish, beans, etc.

Vegetable: Salad greens, spinach, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans, etc. For a serving size, fill about 1/4 of your plate with protein, 1/2 of your plate with vegetables, and the other quarter with healthy carbohydrates.

Carbohydrate: Brown rice, corn, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, 1 slice of whole grain bread etc.

Dessert: 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup of strawberries or raspberries with a dollop of nonfat whipped topping, pear, apple.

SNACKS:

Snacks are what make or break the weight loss. You need to maintain your metabolism in between meals so that is why healthy snacks are essential. For your snack, consume between 100 to 125 calories.

Choose an item from each of the food groups for a healthy balanced snack.

Protein: 1/4 cup of low fat cottage cheese, low fat string cheese, hard boiled egg, small yogurt cup, 1 oz. low sodium, low fat luncheon meat.

Carbohydrate: 1/2 banana, apple, grapes, plum, baby carrots, 1 slice of whole grain bread, etc.

Healthy fats: Handful of almonds, walnuts cashews or mixed nuts, 1 slice of avocado, 2 tbsp of peanut butter.

This doesn't have to hard. These are just guidelines for healthy foods. Don't make this boring by eating the same thing every day. There are so many more foods then what I listed here but be creative. Try a new fruit and vegetable every week. Remember, this is easy! - 27105

Seafood Combo Meals: How To Start

By Shannon Linnen

Seafood combo meals are not only tasty but are also easy to prepare. The variety of seafood available is more and it is hard to go wrong in selection. All the ingredients which are necessary to prepare Seafood combo meals can be had from your local grocery store.

One of the best things about a seafood combo meal is that you get more than one item or type of seafood in your meal. The only thing better than eating lobster tail for dinner is to eat both lobster tail and Alaskan King Crab. Having both items in the same meal just makes the experience that much more satisfying.

If you're new to cooking it's best to start with simpler items, such as shrimp or fish fillets. It's easiest to prepare things you already like, as your cooking instincts will be more accurate. Of course, if you're not an experienced cook and your favorite combo is two pound lobster and scallops, it may be best to start with something easier and work your way up. If you're not sure what kind of food you'd like the most, try to find a fresh seafood sampler at your local grocery.

When preparing any seafood dish, the easiest cooking method is pan-fry. Start with your favorite pasta and a bag of cocktail, or frozen shrimp. It's fairly easy to find these pre-cooked, so you won't risk under-cooking the meal. One very easy starter dish is shrimp pasta.

First, keep all the required ingredients ready. Set out the pasta, a pot of water to boil it in, the shrimp, a frying pan and the favorite oils and spices. The last two can be olive oil, basil leaves and garlic powder. Start boiling the pasta and heat the frying pan. Pour a little oil in the pan and add the shrimp. After sprinkling basil leaves and garlic powder on top, stir the shrimp around the pan till oil and spices are mixed thoroughly with the shrimp.

While the pasta finishes the shrimp will simmer, absorbing the flavor of the oil and spices. When the shrimp begin to sizzle you can turn the heat down slightly, so they quietly simmer in the pan. For added flavor you could add some vegetables, I often add chopped onions and tomatoes.

After the pasta reaches the desired softness, strain it and place it on a plate. Pour the contents of the frying pan over the pasta and mix together. Have a side dish of garlic bread or caesar salad and a healthy seafood combo meal is ready. You can prepare several different kinds of seafood combo meals. As in any activity, here too you learn by practice and so, keep cooking till you find your favorite.

From the ocean to your front door. This is what the online seafood vendor Quality Fresh Seafood abides by. With overnight delivery being such a common thing, just count on Fedex or UPS to bring a fresh and healthy seafood combo meal straight to your door. - 27105

Review of the K Cup Coffeemaker

By Donna Anderson

If you have seen the K Cup Coffeemaster and wonder if it is right for you, the following should help you make a decision. Here, you will learn about my personal favorite, the Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System and how it may be a great fit for you.

What is so special about a K Cup Coffeemaker you ask? Keurig, the company behind the K Cup Coffeemaker, has created a special brewing system that is taking the coffee industry by storm. The B60 is my favorite for its ease of use; you merely place a coffee pod into your machine, press a button, and prepare for a delicious piping hot cup of coffee. When you are finished, the mess free pod is simply thrown away.

Why buy a coffeemaker that makes only one cup at a time?

1. Save Money! No more pouring away that half pot of coffee that you weren't able to finish before it was time to leave for work.

2. The Taste is Amazing! Each cup will be fresh and hot. Gone is that bitter last cup at the bottom of the pot.

3. Variety! You and your guests can each enjoy the coffee of your choice.

4. Easy Clean Up! Because the coffee is stored in sealed, individual use containers, the only thing you need to do after use is toss the pod away. No messy grounds to deal with.

Here's how the K Cup Coffeemaker brews a perfect cup of coffee every time.

The water for brewing is held in a reservoir, and depending on the model, this can be anywhere from 8-ounces to 60-ounces. Some models can be left on continuously, and others turn off automatically, with heating times ranging from 1 to 3 minutes. After placing a coffee pod in the maker, the pod is pierced and hot water is forced through the pod for maximum brewing efficiency. And Voila! One perfect cup of coffee - everytime!

What Is The Best K Cup Coffeemaker?

After trying several different K Cup Coffeemakers, I chose the Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System for it's value and versatility. It has 2 brewing temperatures, allowing me to make a larger mug hotter so it will last longer, and 3 different cup sizes so I can brew a smaller cup on the mornings that I'm rushed. The removable water reservoir is much easier to fill and holds 48-ounces, enough for at least 9 cups of coffee. The B60 is also well built and sturdy and has a pretty blue LED backlighting on the reservoir and control panel making it a perfect fit for my modern kitchen decor. And, unlike other brands, the varieties of coffee that are available for the Keurig B60 are almost unlimited thanks to the special Keurig My K Cup Reusable Coffee Filter.

Will a Single-Cup Brewing System work for entertaining?

Your Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System will be the hit of any party. With a forty-eight ounce reservoir and short one minute intervals, you are able to brew nine cups of coffee without refilling. Your guests will also love selecting their own personal choice of coffee. Everyone will want to know how you made such a great cup of coffee so quickly and easily. Soon, everyone will be coming to your house for coffee!

Is The Keurig B60 Difficult To Use?

No way! You can carry the water reservoir to the sink to fill it, and you won't have to make a mess all over your kitchen counters. You can make at least 9 cups of coffee before you have to refill it again. All you have to do, is lift the handle on the machine, and out in the K Cup Coffee Pod that is pre measured, and then the machine does everything else.

What if I want a stronger cup of coffee?

No problem! There are many different blends to choose from, letting you determine how much of a jolt you need. You can also adjust the size of your cup as well. For a smaller cup less water is needed. Less water will grant you a stronger cup of coffee. You can also mix your blends to find the perfect cup for you. The Keurig B60 also offers a selection of teas and hot chocolates.

Just How Many Coffee Varieties Are There?

More Than You Can Count!

In addition to specially created Keurig coffees, you can purchase a Perfect Pod Holster that will adapt your machine fit coffee pods from nearly any manufacturer. If that isn't enough, there is also the Keurig My K Cup Reusable Coffee Filter. This filter lets you easily use any coffee brand of your choice from store brands to gourmet specialty blends. - 27105

Have Your Own Connecticut Clambakes

By Sherry Shantel

With Connecticut clambakes, seafood parties can be great. Besides being the tasty food they are, clambakes can also refer to an outdoors gathering of people entertained by luscious and healthy seafood meals with fresh vegetables. It can be adapted into any formal or informal event - family reunion, corporate meeting, wedding party, or just a romantic dinner for two.

The hands-on eating lends itself to a casual atmosphere which makes it a terrific icebreaker when meeting new people. Plainly put, clambakes are fun! And with summer's approach, it is the perfect moment to get the water boiling.

Clambakes were originally prepared on the beach, over a huge fire. But some local laws have now prohibited beach fires, so today's technique would have the clambakes cooked over the more efficient propane burner. Even though the traditional method is not often practiced, what's important is that the traditional atmosphere still lives.

Different kinds of foods may be included in the clambake. Some party hosts even serve quahogs (hard shelled clams) for starters. Others also have steamers (soft shelled clams) dipped in butter and a salty broth. Others also prefer their clambakes to include clam chowder, shrimp, and mussels. Corn on the cob, potatoes, salads, stews, and cornbread are some of the popular accompaniments. As for dessert, ice cream is considered the most popular. With all the many food additions and accompaniments, the lobster bisque is still the most important part of the clambake.

For that truly authentic clambake, you must first go to the beach and dig a pit two or three feet deep, line it with rocks, and tend a wood fire until the rocks reach 400 degrees F. The hot rocks are then thickly lined with wet seaweed and layered with potatoes, corn in the husk, and more seaweed. The pit is covered with a tarpaulin, weighted down with more rocks, and is left to steam for about three hours.

If you want a simpler method, just have the shellfish and accompaniments steamed on a stovetop. You can put rocks in a large metal washtub across a couple of burners on the stovetop and layer it with clams and seaweed. You can then pour in a couple of gallons of seawater until it boils. Steam the clambake for twenty minutes.

But if you have neither seawater nor seaweed, you can have a clambake on a rack over hot coals on your grill. It helps to parboil potatoes and live lobster first, because they take longest to cook, but the corn and clams will cook thoroughly in the grill's heat.

For a much simpler version of preparing Connecticut clambakes, just place the clams in a pot add in corn and chorizo and some aromatics such as saffron and shallots. Steam it until the clams open. Since following the traditional clambake cooking method is too laborious, many people opt for the simplest technique. What's really important is that you and your guests will have a fun and healthy time feasting on Connecticut clambakes. - 27105
